Lake Trasimeno has an area of 128 sq km and is the fourth largest lake in Italy. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the area around the lake underwent Etruscan influences but became famous only in 217 BC when the famous battle of Trasimeno was fought where General Hannibal defeated the Roman legionaries.
